Excess fat in the abdominal region poses a greater health risk than excess fat in the hips and thighs and is associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, early onset of heart disease, and certain types of cancers. There is plenty of talk on what constitutes an ideal waist to hip ratio. Ideal to whom? Yourself or someone that looks at you? The "supposed ideal" is just under 0.7.
Calculating your waist to hip ratio is a simple measure to determine if you are overweight. Waist hip ratio is a good indicator of your body shape for men and women. A high waist hip ratio (> 0,85 for women; > 1,0 for men) indicates an apple-shaped or barrel-shaped figure, with a non-existing waistline and a higher risk for heart disease.
(Waist circumference for a woman should not exceed 88 cm and for a man not 102 cm.)
A healthy waist hip ration for men is considered to be below 0.9. Borderline cases are between 0.9 and 1 but above 1 is considered to be unhealthy.
A healthy waist hip ration for women is considered to be below 0.8. Borderline cases are between 0.8 and 0.85 but above 0.85 is considered to be unhealthy.
