Lisa Picton's 10 Training Tips

“Variety is the spice of life!”

My top fitness tip would be to have variety in your training.  In order to see continued improvements in all areas of fitness, it is important to constantly challenge the body and its systems and therefore avoid the risk of plateauing.  The body is very good at becoming efficient and so by doing the same sessions week after week, you could stop noticing improvements.  No matter how small the change is, keep your body on its toes by varying your training intensities and routines - make every session a surprise!

1. Enjoyment – I think that it is really important to enjoy what you do -training should be fun, not a chore.  Smile lots!

2. Hydration – I try to keep well hydrated as I know that dehydration largely affects my performance.

3. Good training nutrition – I find USN’s CytoPower a great training fuel as it tastes great, is high in energy and contains electrolytes that assist me to get the best out of my body.

4. Recovery – I see my rest days are just as important as my training days to allow my body to recuperate and come back stronger.  USN’s Recovery Xcell does wonders for my recovery, especially after a tough training session.

5. Goals - I like to have weekly goals but also having target races gives my training structure and shape and keeps my mind focussed.

6. Massage – I like to have regular massage to alleviate any muscular soreness and help to prevent injury.

7. Core conditioning – I recognise the importance of maintaining a strong core as it is the foundations that we then build upon.

8. Variety – I like my training to be varied to avoid plateauing and boredom.

9. A Coached Programme – Having a well-designed training plan to work from is a great way of getting the best out of yourself; working with an experienced coach alleviates the guesswork in training. Richard Jones of the Trilife writes my training programmes.

10. Group training – I like to training on my own but also training with others can be a really motivator and a good way to gauge performance.
