DOES AN APPLE A DAY KEEP THE DOCTOR AWAY?

DOES AN APPLE A DAY KEEP THE DOCTOR AWAY?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away? We have all heard that "eating an apple a day will keep the doctor away". But how true is it? Has it been scientifically proven accurate or simply an urban myth? Here at USN, we’ve discovered everything you need to know about the tale as old as time.

Where did it originate?

Its origin is unclear. However, according to the internet, the proverb has slightly changed since it was first recorded in Pembrokeshire in the 1860s. Its original form was, “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” The current phrasing of “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” began at the end of the 19th century, possibly because it was shorter? We’re not really sure!

Well, that’s possibly the most inaccurate history lesson over, lets get onto the stuff we do know about… nutrition!

Is it true?

You can’t help but wonder whether there’s any truth to "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" and if so, how great is that? Whilst there have been a few scientific studies into whether eating an apple a day will prevent you from taking trips to your doctor’s office, it has been concluded that it is invalid.

However, during their range of experiments, they did discover that apple consumption significantly reduced cholesterol levels, and those who ate an apple a day required less prescription medication. Still, no, the proverb is a myth!

But, I hate apples?

That’s no problem at all—there are thousands of alternatives to apples, including our specialised range of nutritional drinks and snacks here at USN. Whilst we always recommend that you eat your daily fruits and vegetables, we also know that sometimes you want something that tastes like… oh, we don’t know—chocolate, maybe?
